Connecting Generations

Aanikoobijigeng, the National Native American Language Resource Center, was established through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving key partners and is also linked to the Regional Native American Language Resource Centers.

Pillars of Our Work

Advancing the collective understanding of NALA by familiarizing Native American language programs and organizations with the law and its implications, and developing and implementing policies to achieve NALA’s policy goals.

We work to build and strengthen networks and collaborations to advance NALA’s policy goals through advocacy, capacity building, and technical assistance. In addition, we work to establish and sustain relationships with federal, tribal, state, and local governments to inform, enact, fund, and implement effective Native American language policies.

Enhancing Indigenous teacher education programs by supporting online resources and creating NALA-aligned alternative pathways for Native American language teachers, including training and certification.

We develop and cultivate research, best practices, and policies across the continuum of Native American language education–from dual language to medium schools to immersion programs. This ensures that Native American language teachers have the support they need to educate the next generation of language speakers.

Delivering accessible, high-quality resources to Native American language programs, spotlighting effective practices for language acquisition and use.

We create new resources, including videos and handbooks, to support your journey toward language reclamation and revitalization. We also carefully curate valuable work produced by practitioners over decades. This ensures you have access to the best and most essential content available, including materials from our content partners (see our partners section below).

Sharing national and international best practices in Indigenous language revitalization research through a variety of platforms and channels.

We house and publish an extensive library of research from across the Native American language field on a wide variety of topics including literature reviews, proficiency scales, best practices, and evaluations of different models and programs. Our Resource Library will help to inform the field, communities, and policymakers.

We host annual conferences to bring together indigenous language revitalization educators, linguists, advocates to share knowledge and best practices.

Empowering the next generation of Native American language advocates through immersive summer leadership programs designed for youth.

Our Next Generation Young Adult Leadership program empowers the next generation of Native American language advocates. This program unites young leaders from key language revitalization efforts, institutions, and programs to form a powerful collaborative network. Through intensive summer leadership development, we help leaders to build skills, exchange cultural knowledge, and gain a comprehensive understanding of the policy and political landscape necessary to drive effective language reclamation and preservation in your community. Our team at N-NALRC ensures continued connection through projects, advocacy, and conferences, sharing your knowledge across the country.
